Sixth Season of Archaeological Excavations at Prisunjača – Ciganica

From 7 to 26 September 2026, the sixth season of systematic archaeological excavations was carried out at the site of Prisunjača – Ciganica in Vođinci, as part of the CULPLUS project.

This year’s excavations focused on the continued investigation of Structure 3. The removal of its floor enabled the documentation of a stratigraphic section and the collection of numerous samples for further interdisciplinary analyses. Several large refuse pits located outside the structure were also excavated, providing samples for microbotanical, archaeobotanical, palynological, and archaeozoological analyses. The results of these analyses will provide new insights into dietary practices, the exploitation of plant and animal resources, and environmental conditions during the occupation of the site.

A particularly interesting discovery was the first metal artefact found at the site, recovered from one of the excavated pits. The artefact is currently undergoing compositional analysis to determine the material from which it was made.

The excavations were conducted by project team members Ina Miloglav, Jacqueline Balen, Miroslav Vuković, and Mia Marijan.

The excavation campaign also included field practise for students of the Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. The students had the opportunity to participate in archaeological excavations, sampling strategies and gain practical experience in fieldwork methods and the documentation of archaeological finds and contexts.
