Carlos G. Santiago-Marrero obtained his PhD in History from Universitat Pompeu Fabra in 2022 and has served as a postdoctoral research assistant at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). He is an archaeobotanist specialising in the analysis of phytoliths and starch grains from archaeological contexts. His research focuses on human–plant interactions, particularly plant processing activities, culinary practices, foodways, and palaeoecology in past societies. He has participated in over 20 archaeological research projects across the Caribbean, Europe, North and South America, Africa, Western Asia, and Southeast Asia, as well as in three ERC-funded programmes. He has authored over 15 publications and book chapters and has served as a reviewer and guest editor for more than 10 scientific journals and research agencies. He has also been a guest lecturer at the Spanish National Research Council, the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and Aix-Marseille University.
He is currently Principal Investigator of the Caguana Archaeological Project: Anthropogenic and Sociocultural Landscapes in Pre-Columbian Puerto Rico (PArqC), supported by Fundación Palarq, and actively collaborates on projects in Turkey, Greece, Chile, Spain, and the Dutch Caribbean. He is also a member of the Surface and Use-wear Research of Tools Laboratory (SUTR Lab) at the Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences and a visiting fellow at the Human Behavioral Ecology and Archaeometry Laboratory (IDEA Lab) at Hacettepe University.
