Biography:
Mia Marijan obtained her master’s degree in Archaeology in 2021 at the Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, where she had previously completed her undergraduate studies in Archaeology as well as in Spanish Language and Literature. Her MA thesis, Archaeological Evidence of the Controlled Use of Fire in Late Bronze Age Households at the Kalnik-Igrišče Site, directed her scientific interests toward prehistoric pottery, fire-related technologies, and the everyday and culinary practices of prehistoric communities.
For more than ten years, she has participated in archaeological research in Croatia, Greece, and Spain, further developing her experience through work on a scientific research project at the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb focused on prehistoric pottery traditions. She is the author and co-author of several scientific papers and preliminary reports and an active participant in national and international conferences.
Within the CULPLUS project, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sc. Ina Miloglav, Mia Marijan will investigate changes in dietary and culinary practices of the Copper Age in eastern Croatia, based on analyses of ceramics used for food preparation, cooking, and storage. Her doctoral research focuses on the application of microbotanical analyses, with an emphasis on inorganic residues—particularly starch and phytoliths—combined with organic residue analyses, with the aim of developing an integrated methodological framework for the study of prehistoric diet. Through this research, she aims to contribute to a better understanding of the relationships between subsistence strategies, the environment, and social, economic, and technological changes in the Copper Age, as well as to the introduction of new analytical approaches in Croatian archaeology.
